Is Telegram safe for sexting? The short answer
Yes, more than most apps, if you set it up properly. Your phone number can stay hidden, you can write with a simple username, and secret chats are end to end encrypted. But no app can stop the other person from keeping what you send. Safety is half settings, half common sense.
Anonymous sexting: what stays hidden
- Your phone number. Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number, then "Nobody". People see your username, never your number.
- Your name. Your Telegram name is whatever you type. A first name or a nickname is enough.
- Your profile photo. Leave it empty, or limit who can see it in Privacy and Security.
- Your last seen time. You can hide when you were last online.
Anonymous here means anonymous to the other person. Telegram itself still knows the phone number you signed up with.
Is Telegram private? Normal chats and secret chats
A normal Telegram chat is stored in Telegram's cloud so you can read it on your phone and your computer. It is encrypted on the way and on the servers, but it is not end to end encrypted.
A secret chat is different:
- End to end encrypted. Only the two phones can read it.
- Stays on the device. It does not appear on your other devices and is not stored in the cloud.
- Self destruct timer. Messages, photos and videos can disappear after a few seconds or a few days.
- Screenshots. On many phones, screenshots are blocked in a secret chat, or the other person is told when one is taken.
To open one, go to the person's profile, tap the three dots and choose "Start Secret Chat".
The limits no app can remove
- The other person can always photograph the screen with a second phone.
- A self destruct timer starts once the message is read, not before.
- A photo that shows your face with a recognisable place says more than you think.
The best rule stays the simplest: only send what you would be fine with seeing again.
